Key Takeaways

Ways to simplify Disney days:

  • Preview first: Ride videos turn unknowns into familiarity.
  • Start with DAS: Virtual waits reduce crowded-line overload.
  • Use stroller support: It’s a safe reset space and queue aid.

As a Disney Travel Expert and a special needs mom, Disneyland is more than just a destination for our family. It’s a place where some of our most meaningful memories are made and a safe place for us to keep coming back to.

I spend my days helping families plan seamless, joy-filled Disney vacations, but I also experience the parks in a very personal way. My son was born with Down syndrome. He is non-verbal and has high sensory needs, which means our Disneyland days look a little different.

But here’s the truth I always come back to… different can still be incredibly magical!

With the right tools, a little extra intention, and support in the right places… Disneyland becomes a space where my whole family can feel safe, happy, and completely immersed in the magic!

Here are some of the ways we make that happen.

1.  Prep Before You Ever Arrive

Some of our most important planning happens before we even walk through the gates. We spend time watching POV ride videos on YouTube and even simple walkthroughs of the parks.

For my son, familiarity changes everything! When he’s already seen what a ride looks like or what a space feels like, it removes so much of the unknown. Instead of being overwhelmed, he can settle in more comfortably and actually look forward to what we are headed to do next. It’s such a simple step, but it makes a huge difference in how our day unfolds.

2.  Start with DAS (Disability Access Service)

DAS has truly been a game changer for our family. It allows us to wait for attractions virtually instead of standing in long, crowded queues that can be overstimulating.

You can pre-register for DAS online 2 to 60 days before your trip through a live video chat with a Cast Member, which I always recommend! If that timing doesn’t work, you can also stop by a Disability Services booth located at the old ticket booths and get everything set up there.

Once approved, you’ll select return times for attractions right in the Disneyland app. It functions like waiting in line, just without physically being in it. For my son, that shift is everything. It allows him to stay regulated, comfortable, and happy… which means we get more smiles, more laughter, and more moments that actually feel like magic as a family!

3.  Rent a Stroller You Can Count On

On our last couple of visits, we’ve switched to renting a stroller through BabyQuip, and it has been such a game changer for our trips!

Not having to travel with our own stroller is already a huge win, but what I love most is the quality and reliability. When we arrive, everything is ready and waiting for us, and I know my son has a comfortable, supportive space throughout the day.

For us, a stroller isn’t just about convenience. It’s his safe place! It’s where he can reset, take a break, and feel secure in the middle of a very busy, stimulating environment. BabyQuip makes that part of our trip feel seamless, and that peace of mind is priceless when I’m already juggling everything else.

4.  Get Your Stroller Tagged as a Wheelchair

One of my go-to tips for families is to stop by Guest Services and have your stroller tagged as a wheelchair. Bonus Tip: You don’t have to go to town hall at the front of the park to do this, look for the Green Umbrellas anywhere in the park and you can be assisted there!

This allows my son to remain in his stroller in certain queues when needed, which can make a huge difference! Spaces like the Haunted Mansion stretching room, where guests are gathered closely together, can be a lot for him. Being able to keep him in his stroller gives him that sense of comfort and stability in moments that might otherwise feel overwhelming.

5.  Use Mobile Ordering for Stress-Free Meals

Meal times don’t have to feel chaotic. Mobile ordering in the Disneyland app has made food breaks so much smoother for our family.

Sometimes I’ll order ahead so our food is ready right when we arrive. Other times, we’ll find a quiet table first and order once we’re settled. Either way, it keeps us out of long lines and helps us avoid unnecessary stress, especially when everyone is hungry and needs a moment to recharge!

6.  Bring a “Busy Bag” for the In-Between Moments

Even with the best planning, there are always little pockets of waiting throughout the day. I always pack a small “busy bag” with items I know my son loves.

Think stickers, bubbles, glow sticks, a drawing pad… simple things that bring comfort and joy. These little moments of engagement go such a long way in helping him stay regulated and content while we wait for a parade, food, or our next experience.

7. Come Prepared for Sensory Needs + the Unexpected

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that being prepared changes everything.

We always bring noise-canceling headphones, especially for fireworks or louder attractions. Having them on hand means we can say yes to more experiences without worrying about sensory overload.

I also pack extra snacks, backup clothes, and any diapering essentials we might need. It gives me the freedom to handle anything that comes up without stress, and keeps our day flowing as smoothly as possible.

8.  Say Yes to the Bubble Wand

This is one of my favorite little pieces of magic… Say yes to the Disney bubble wand!

There’s just something about it. The lights, the movement, the bubbles floating all around… it creates the sweetest distraction and sense of joy! When my son is riding in his stroller from one place to the next, that bubble wand keeps him happy, engaged, and completely in his own magical little world!

9.  Stay Close to the Parks

Staying within walking distance of Disneyland has been one of the best decisions we make every trip! Whether that’s staying directly on-property at one of the Disney resort hotels or across the street at a Good Neighbor Hotel.

Having the option to step away for a few hours and head back to our hotel is everything! It gives my son that time to rest and reset, but honestly it gives all of us a chance to recharge. When we come back later, we’re refreshed and ready to soak in even more magic together!

Disneyland with a special needs child might look a little different, but it is just as beautiful, just as meaningful, and just as full of magic!

These are the moments I hold onto. The joy, the connection, the memories we’re making together as a family. I often joke that a day at Disneyland is easier for us as a special needs family, than a day at the local Zoo is and it’s because of all the amazing accommodations that Disney provides.

With the right support, thoughtful planning, and tools like BabyQuip to make things easier, it truly becomes a place where everyone can experience the magic! And that’s why it’s the vacation my family keeps going back to, again and again!
